Scope after BAMS — what graduates actually do.

Six realistic paths

• Clinical practice

  Register with the state Board of Ayurvedic and Unani Systems of Medicine and practise as a BAMS doctor, in your own clinic or an Ayurvedic hospital.

• Postgraduate study (MD/MS Ayurveda)

  Sit AIAPGET for MD or MS in Ayurveda across the 14 specialities, or take a PG diploma. Many graduates also add an MPH or hospital-administration qualification.

• Government service

  AYUSH medical officer posts in state health services, ESI, railways, defence and the National AYUSH Mission are recruited from BAMS graduates.

• Panchakarma & wellness

  Panchakarma physician roles in wellness resorts, integrative hospitals and corporate wellness programmes in India and abroad.

• Ayurvedic pharma & R&D

  Product development, quality control, formulation and medical-affairs roles in AYUSH pharmaceutical companies.

• Academics & research

  Teaching posts in Ayurveda colleges after MD/MS, and clinical or epidemiological research in approved research institutions.

Postgraduate specialities

On salary figures

Treat any single published salary number with suspicion. Earnings depend on the route, the city and the years: salaried entry roles in hospitals and wellness centres start modestly, government AYUSH medical officer posts follow state pay scales, and independent practice income scales with patient base — typically rising sharply after a specialisation and five to seven years. We share verified current openings rather than averages copied between websites.

Practising outside India

Ayurveda is regulated differently abroad. A BAMS degree permits registered practice in India and Sri Lanka; in most European and North American jurisdictions Ayurveda sits outside the licensed medical system, so graduates usually work in wellness, consultancy, education or research roles rather than as licensed physicians. Check the destination country's regulator before planning around it.
