BAMS vs MBBS, BHMS and BUMS — which should I choose?

The structural differences are small; the practice scope and cut-offs are not:

• MBBS — 5½ years, NMC regulated, highest cut-off and fees, allopathic practice rights
• BAMS — 5½ years, NCISM regulated, Ayurvedic medicine and surgery, strong panchakarma and wellness scope
• BHMS — 5½ years, NCH regulated, homoeopathic practice
• BUMS — 5½ years, NCISM regulated, Unani medicine

When BAMS is the better choice

Choose BAMS if your NEET percentile puts an MBBS seat out of reach at a fee you can carry, and you are genuinely interested in a system with its own diagnostic logic. Ayurveda's demand in chronic disease management, preventive care, panchakarma and the wellness industry has grown steadily, and government AYUSH recruitment adds a salaried route.

What not to base the decision on

Do not choose on the assumption that a BAMS degree confers allopathic practice rights — scope is defined by NCISM and state rules. Do not assume a private MBBS seat at several times the fee is automatically the better investment either; run both totals across 5½ years before deciding.
