Shalya Tantra (Surgery)

What the department covers

Shalya Tantra teaches Sushruta's surgical tradition alongside modern surgical fundamentals: asepsis, suturing, wound management and pre- and post-operative care. Kshara sutra therapy for fistula-in-ano and piles is a signature Ayurvedic procedure with strong published outcomes, and students assist in the operation theatre during clinical postings and internship.

Where it sits in the course

This subject is taught in the final professional year of the BAMS programme at Sri Paripoorna Sanathana Ayurveda Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, which runs 5 years 6 months (4½ years academic + 12 months compulsory rotatory internship) and is examined by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru. Practical work is supported by the department's own museum or laboratory and, for clinical subjects, by postings in the attached NABH-accredited teaching hospital.
